Broadcast Television Director

David is a multi-camera TV director with over 30 years’ directing experience at the BBC. As a senior “TV News Director”, David directed the full portfolio of programmes from daily news output to outside broadcast coverage of all the major news events in Northern Ireland over that time, as well as programmes in other genre’s.

David is experienced in live and recorded programmes.

In recent times David has directed:

– Live international pool coverage of the Proclamation and subsequent visit of King Charles III to Hillsborough – Sept. 2022

– Live OB inject into Network BBC 1 programme for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee from OB in Enniskillen – June 2022

– Leaders’ Debate and election coverage for the NI Assembly election – May 2022

A Brief history.

David joined the BBC in 1985 and trained as an audio assistant at the BBC’s training centre in Evesham. Over the following 6 years David worked across Radio and Television output. In 1991 David took an attachment with BBC NI Sport, as an assistant producer. During this time, he trained as a multicamera director. In 1992 David moved to a permanent role as TV News director with the newsroom in Belfast. Since then, David has directed coverage of every major news event in Northern Ireland, such as the visit of US President Bill Clinton, The Good Friday Agreement, The Referendum, Bush / Blair Summit at Hillsborough, all of Queen Elizabeth II’s visit’s to NI, more recently an OB from Enniskillen to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, George Best’s funeral at Stormont, Ian Paisley memorial from the Ulster Hall as well as every election since 1992.

David has also directed programmes in other genre’s, which have included live, unscripted music, motorcycle, and acrobatic stunts as well as multiple location live link ups and childrens’ programmes. David has directed almost every “Nolan Live” for the past 15 years  – including a two centre live simulcast across BBC & RTE with The Clair Byrne show – as well as “Top Table” for Third Street Studios. In the past year David has directed two series of the Blame Game, a comedy panel show for Moondog productions.

With his operational background David is comfortable operating equipment “live and on air” including, basic vision mixing, EVS IP director and the Viz Multi-play graphics system. David is also trained in the use of Open Media (Superuser level) and ENPS newsroom systems as well as the Cinegy editing system.

David has an advanced Diploma in Management practice (Ulster University & Boston College) and is experienced in leading teams, either for TV coverage or project based, such as set refurbishment or technical installations. In 2019 David was a senior project manager leading a team to transition BBC News NI from ENPS to Open Media.
